Find out from @espressoandmartini why winter Is the perfect time to explore the outdoors in Seattle Southside.
Crisp air, quieter trails, moody Puget Sound views. Winter brings out a different kind of magic in Seattle Southside. Bundle up, grab a thermos, and make the most of the season with these easy, close-to-home or hotel, outdoor ideas.
Seaside strolls & marine moments
Redondo Beach & Boardwalk
Enjoy glassy-water sunrises, storm-watching, and alpenglow sunsets along the renovated boardwalk. Pair your walk with a peek into the MaST Center Aquarium (free to the public on Saturdays) to learn what’s swimming beneath the surface—then step back outside to scan for seals and seabirds.
Des Moines Marina & Pier
Stretch your legs “out on the water” along the long public pier and watch winter light dance over the Olympics—prime golden-hour territory.
Saltwater State Park
Forest trails meet a protected Puget Sound beach—great for tidepool peeks on extra-low winter tides and peaceful shoreline rambles. (Divers love the underwater park here, and the water temperature doesn't change much over the seasons.)
Quiet green escapes (no long drive required)
Des Moines Creek Trail → Beach connection
This paved, wind-sheltered corridor threads evergreens and creek sounds all the way to Des Moines Beach Park—ideal for family walks, bikes, or birding when you want an easy dose of nature.
Des Moines Beach Park
Meander the waterfront paths and lawns, then warm up with a picnic blanket and hot drinks from nearby Quarterdeck while the kids explore.
Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden
Winter is for structure and texture—twisting branches, conifers, and peaceful ponds. Stroll the paths for a restorative breather between errands or flights.
Angle Lake Park
Loop the lakeside paths for a brisk park lap and sunrise reflections; it’s a calm, easy outing on short winter days.
Interurban Trail
Start on the pedestrian bridge for views of the Green River, then walk along it as you spy birds flying overhead.
Practical winter tips:
Dress the PNW way: waterproof layer + insulating mid-layer + warm hat/gloves.
Check tides & daylight: Short days mean prime golden hour—arrive a bit early.
Mind the footing: Many trails here are paved or well-maintained, but bring traction if it’s frosty.
Warm-up plan: Keep a thermos in the car or end near cafés along the Marina/Redondo corridors.
